Preston Guild Merchant: A Study of Traditional Involvement in a Civic Ceremony
Description
A dissertation providing impressions of the 1972 Preston Guild Merchant ( Preston, Lancashire), based on personal observation and interviews with local people (who also provided information on the 1952, 1922 and 1902 Guilds). Printed sources provided information on the origin and progress of Guilds over the period 1328 to 1862. The first part of the study concerns the historical origins of the Guild, and includes sections on the Guild Charters, the religious element, traditional aspects and events and the occurrence of the Guilds. The second part concentrates on the 1972 Guild, and contains sections on overall organisation, the part played by the Preston schools, the religious processions, the personal viewpoints of the informants regarding the overall event, and other smaller traditional aspects (for example, Preston Drama Club, street parties and decorations).
