The Living Dialect of Delph in the West Riding of Yorkshire
Description
A study of the dialect of Delph in the old West Riding of Yorkshire, based on fieldwork undertaken by the collector towards the end of 1956. An introduction to the village (including postcard print views) is followed by five chapters which give a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1956, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1956, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of stressed vowels in the Delph dialect. General appendices contain notes on syntactical considerations and Proper Names, and orthographic and phonetic transcriptions of a tape-recorded interview with two Delph residents, made in November 1956 by the collector.
