A Descriptive and Historical Study of the Dialect of Broadbottom, Cheshire
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in the Cheshire village of Broadbottom, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with two local informants. An introduction to the village and informants (including photographs) is followed by four chapters which present the phonology of the Broadbottom dialect, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian, French and other sources of the stressed vowels in the Broadbottom dialect. A Word List is included.
