Description

A study of Rochdale Market, comprising chapters giving historical background information, descriptions of the market and its administration in 1971, childhood in Rochdale at the turn of the twentieth century and impressions of the market. The latter chapter contains sections on the market layout, dress, daily routine, types of stall, Quacks, refreshment stalls, thieves, cries, Italians, Hawkers, social life, customer-seller relationships, fishmongery, goods in the present-day market and how prices are fixed, the future of the market. Photographs of the market taken at the beginning of the twentieth century, and in 1971, are included. A glossary of local terms is included, and three appendices present selected information on the population and occupations of Rochdale, 1861-1921, advertisements from the 'Rochdale Observer', January 1901, and the Annual Report of the Market Superintendent for the year ended 31st March 1969.
