Hazel, Willow and Elder - Three British Trees, Their Uses and Folklore, with Special Reference to the Survey of English Dialects

Description

A collection of quotations concerning the uses of, and folklore associated with, hazel, willow and elder trees, based on printed sources and references made to them by informants involved in the Survey of English Dialects (SED). Some of this information was originally recorded as Incidental Material in the SED questionnaire response books. The geographical distribution of names for the three trees, based on SED responses, is illustrated on maps as used in the 'Linguistic Atlas of England'. Etymologies and comments on the names are also given, and photocopied illustrations of tree varieties are included.
