A Phonological Study of the Dialects of Northumberland

Description

A study of the dialects spoken in Northumberland, based on fieldwork undertaken in the county in 1953 by Stanley Ellis, for the Survey of English Dialects. An introduction to the seven villages comprising the network chosen to illustrate the general development of the dialect is followed by chapters on the development of Middle English sounds in the dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), and changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1953. The final chapter presents a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of stressed vowels in the dialect. A Word List is included. An Appendix contains printed maps illustrating variations in the pronunciation of forty-nine selected words, and printed sheets which contain phonetic transcriptions of 267 words. In both cases, the words are those recorded by Stanley Ellis in the seven selected villages.
