The Living Dialect of Midgley in the West Riding of Yorkshire

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in Midgley, in the old West Riding of Yorkshire, based on the collector's interviews with seven local informants, and an audio recording of a Midgley speaker made by Stanley Ellis in January 1956. The study comprises an introduction to the village, its dialect and the informants interviewed, followed by three chapters which give a descriptive account of the sounds of the Midgley dialect recorded in 1956, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of stressed vowels in the Midgley dialect. General appendices present some notes on syntactical considerations, and orthographic and phonetic transcriptions of Ellis' audio recording. Photographs include general views of the village, and one of Oats Royd Mills (worsted spinning and weaving).
