Description
A study of the pub singing tradition in East Suffolk, with particular reference to the singers Bob Hart from Snape, and Percy Webb of Tunstall. The first of four chapters presents an introduction to the tradition and the geographical area, and brief biographical details of the informants. Chapter Two examines the singers' singing style and performance, and includes tune transcriptions of songs from their repertoires. Chapter Three looks at the relationships between the songs, the singers and the community of which they are a part. Text and tune transcriptions are grouped according to a number of categories - work-related, bawdy, tragic, sentimental, humorous. The final chapter raises a number of theoretical points concerning folksong scholarship.
Tape Tables of Contents for the four audiotapes submitted with the dissertation are included. Tune transcriptions of Percy Webb's singing of 'The Dark Eyed Sailor' and 'Flash Company' are also included.
