Hedge Building in Mid and West Cornwall
Description
A study of hedge building in Cornwall, based on information from printed sources, interviews with informants who responded to the collector's letter of enquiry (printed in two local newspapers), and further information from completed questionnaires compiled by the collector. The study provides a historical background to the craft of hedge building in the county, with sections covering enclosure from the New Stone Age to the Celts, the sixteenth century and nineteenth century developments. The main section on the hedge includes sections on general construction principles, materials used, the hedge builders, construction method, inserting a gate post and inserting a stile. Appendices include photocopies of printed sources referred to, a hedge plan drawn by Cornwall County Council, and a glossary of related dialect words and a guide to their distribution. Photographs show stages in the construction of a hedge and examples of completed, established hedges.
