An Account of the Phonology of the Dialect of Gosforth in the County of Cumberland

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in Gosforth, in the old county of Cumberland, based on fieldwork undertaken in June and December 1949. An introduction to the village is followed by chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1949, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), and changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1950. The first of four appendices presents examples of the Gosforth dialect, in the form of phonetically transcribed extracts concerning pig killing, bacon curing, buttermaking, a recipe for rum butter, candlemaking, wrestling, hound trailing, otter hunting, fox hunting and Boonwood Fair. The second appendix contains information on ploughing, the third presents tables of principal parts of some strong verbs, the fourth contains line drawings (labelled phonetically) of a plough, plough harness and two-wheeled farm cart. A list of local place names and surnames, with their dialect pronunciations, and a Word List, are also included.
