Holmewood. Portrait of a Village: A Survey of the Customs, Traditions and Beliefs in a Derbyshire Mining Village

Description

A study of the folklore of Holmewood in Derbyshire. Its sections provide a brief description of the old village, with particular reference to places and objects which are part of the life and traditions of the villagers, followed by descriptions of superstitions, local tales and rumours, ghosts in the pits, miners' pastimes and hobbies, customs and habits in the pits, annual events (including Hardwick Wakes, the Miners' Camp, inter-colliery cricket match, annual gala, The Derby Ram and Tupping), children's games, customs and pastimes (including Mischief Night and Bull-Roaring), folk medicines and recipes. Two appendices contain general remarks on dialect and accent and a dialect glossary, and general information about Williamthorpe Colliery and the miners' attitudes to work.
