The Legend of Lady Godiva

Description

An examination of the legend of Lady Godiva, comprising four sections. The first, presenting a history of the legend, includes transcripts and a discussion of seven accounts of the legend, a discussion of historical facts and truth relating to the Godiva story. The second section considers three accounts of the origins of the legend, as explained by E. S. Hartland, Frederick Bliss Burbidge and H. R. Ellis Davidson. Section three analyses the legend, and considers how far it is a folk tale, with reference to Axel Olrik's chapter 'Epic Laws of Folk Narrative' in Alan Dundes' 'The Study of Folklore' (Englewood Cliffs, N.J. : Prentice-Hall, 1965), Stith Thompson's 'Motif Index of Folk Literature' (Helsinki, 1932-1935) and V. I. Propp's 'Morphology of the Folk Tale' (Texas Press, 1968). The final section considers the legend as a local tradition, and outlines the origins and history of the Godiva Procession in Coventry . This section also includes part transcriptions of interviews with local people concerning contemporary perceptions of the legend and recollections of the Procession, as well as a section on the legend in art and literature.
