The Dialect of South Shields (Tyne and Wear): A Descriptive and Historical Examination of the Phonology of the Dialect, Plus a Survey of the Characteristic Rhythm and Intonation Features of the Speech

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with three local inhabitants (two of whom were the collector's grandmothers). Reference is made in the Introduction to the tape recording of these informants, but no such items were submitted with the study. An introduction to the town and the informants (including photographs) is followed by five chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 19[78], describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1979, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the modern South Shields dialect. An Appendix contains comments (with examples) on the rhythm and intonation of the modern South Shields dialect. An Index and an Ordnance Survey map (Tyneside Sheet 88, held in the back pocket of the binding) are included.
