Description
A study of gravestones, their inscriptions and iconographical details, covering the eighteenth century to 1982, and based on fieldwork in North London. The first chapter gives a brief history of the development of burial grounds, and an introduction to the monuments found therein. Chapter Two contains two sections; the first on iconographical features of eighteenth century tombstones, the second on features of nineteenth and twentieth century tombstone designs. Chapters Three and Four contain sections on tombstone inscriptions and the use of lettering in the three centuries under examination. Photographs and examples of inscriptions and styles of lettering are included.
