The Effect of Tourism on a Highland Culture: A Study of Kilchoan, Ardnamurchan
Description
A dissertation comprising five chapters. The first presents a brief history and description of the village of Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula. The second describes the old culture of the village (employment, primarily crofting; social life, including ceilidhs; schooling; birth, marriage and death). The third chapter charts the advent and growth of tourism in the area, with sections on accommodation, types of tourists and holidays, visitor numbers, amenities and access. The fourth chapter discusses the effect of tourism on the culture of Kilchoan, in terms of the general standard of living, employment opportunities, social events and language. The final chapter offers conclusions and suggestions for further development (accommodation, facilities and access). Photographs and postcard prints show views of the village and surrounding area.
