The Living Dialect of Farndon

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in Farndon in Cheshire, based on interviews with one male informant, Lloyd Davies. An introduction to the village, the collector's search for suitable informants and the informant selected, is followed by three chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 19[72] (vowels of stressed syllables, consonants), describe the development of Middle English sounds in the dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), and consonantal changes from Old English and Middle English to the modern dialect. An index of words recorded by the collector is included.
