The Dialect of Dalby and Glen Maye

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in and around the villages of Dalby and Glen Maye on the Isle of Man. Fieldwork was undertaken over the period 1952 to 1954, and involved the collecting of data from informants through informal conversation and answers given to questions from the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire. Two audio recordings of Dalby speakers were made in January 1953. An introductory section includes background information on the two localities, and biographical details of the collector's informants. Five chapters present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1952-1954, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Middle English sounds in the two localities, and present a tabular summary of the sources of Dalby and Glen Maye vowels of stressed syllables. Appendices present words of Manx origin still in use, miscellaneous expressions and idioms, Dalby and Glen Maye words not recorded in Joseph Wright's 'English Dialect Dictionary' (1898-1905), orthographic transcriptions of speech recorded by the collector on gramophone discs, and examples taken from these passages and transcribed phonetically.
