Phonology of the Dialect of Fleetwood, Lancashire

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in Fleetwood in Lancashire. A number of leaves have been removed from this piece of work, and as a consequence the current item starts at Chapter Three, on the development of Middle English sounds in the living Fleetwood dialect (vowels of stressed syllables). Further chapters concern changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1949, and the development of Middle English sounds in the living Fleetwood dialect (vowels of unstressed syllables). Ten appendices comprise occupational language and pencil drawings relating to the Fleetwood fishing industry, with sections on boat building, tacking, winds and the weather, tides, compass and directions, fishermen's clothing, tools and watches at sea, moorings, nets, fish and fishing grounds. A Word List is also included.
