Street Cries of London
Description
A study of the cries of London street traders, divided into two parts. The first traces the history and development of street cries, whilst the second considers the situation existing in 1972. The latter section describes the different types of street sellers and markets, the selling techniques employed by the traders, their dress, demonstrations and patter. Appendices contain newspaper articles relating to the subject, and typed transcriptions of tape recordings made of street sellers working in Oxford Street and Petticoat Lane Market, London. These transcriptions are accompanied by photographs of the sellers, their stalls and customers. Photographic copies of a set of cigarette cards (undated), entitled 'Cries of London' and illustrating a variety of street sellers, are also included.
