The Living Dialect of Ashington (Northumberland): A Descriptive and Historical Survey
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in the village of Ashington in Northumberland, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with two local informants. An introduction to the village and the informants is followed by three chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 19[75], and describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables). An Appendix contains an extract from an interview with one of the informants, Wilf Marley, transcribed phonetically and orthographically. An Index of Words is included.
