The Goldsmith or Jeweller and Associated Customs in the Tamil Speaking Community of South Africa

Description

A dissertation which considers the origins of the goldsmithing trade, looks at the manufacture of jewellery in South Africa by the Tamil speaking community of that country, and describes some of the customs associated with jewellers. The study contains sections on the goldsmith in India, the manufacture of jewellery in South Africa, and occasions, festivals and customs associated with jewellers. The latter section considers the jeweller's functions in connection with birth (naming ceremony, christening), coming of age, ear-piercing, engagement, weddings, birthdays, children's illnesses (the making of lucky charms), moving into a new house or shop, the Festival of Sarasvathi. A glossary of Tamil words used is included. Photographs show stages in the manufacture of a gold ring, and completed items of (wedding) jewellery.
