Description

A study of horseracing folklore, with particular reference to the town of Newmarket in Suffolk. Sections include an introduction to the sport and its association with Newmarket, occupational folklore relating to custom and belief (luck, colour, other animals, buying and shoeing horses, nicknames, present-giving, blackballing, folk medicine, the Newmarket Town Plate [race]), a supernatural legend, a Gypsy Traveller boy's grave and anecdotes about local people. A glossary of horseracing-related terms is included.
