The Phonology of the Living Dialect of Edstaston in Shropshire

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in Edstaston in Shropshire, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with four Edstaston residents. An introduction to the village and the informants is followed by six chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1958, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1958, present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of stressed vowels in the living dialect, and conclude with a section on accidence (personal pronouns and the verb to be). The first of two appendices presents a vocabulary of the local farming industry, based on dialectal data collected from one of the collector's farmer informants. The names of tools and other equipment are listed alphabetically, with accompanying pencil drawings (labelled phonetically) and explanations of their function. The second appendix contains specimen Dieth-Orton Questionnaire Response Book sheets, with answers recorded phonetically by the collector for Books II, IV-VII. These are followed by a general Word List.
