Description

A study of the folklore and folk life of Ayton in North Yorkshire, comprising sections which cover buildings and places of interest, masons' marks, occupations, local characters, an orange wine recipe, bee-keeping, customs (Riding the Stang, including verses), calendar customs (Christmas, New Year, Shrove Tuesday, Easter, May Day, Royal Oak Day, Hallowe'en, Mischief Night, Guy Fawkes and Martinmas), agricultural customs (Harvest, sheep-shearing), beliefs concerning birth, death, marriage, the human body, animals and birds, plants, the weather, charms and cures and supernatural legends. Photographs and postcard prints of East and West Ayton (early twentieth century and 1974) are included.
