Sheep Farming in Eskdale, Cumberland
Description
A thesis which concentrates on aspects of sheep farming in Eskdale, with particular reference to one farming family in the area. Fieldwork was carried out between 1965 and 1966. The study is divided into five sections. The first provides an introduction to the geography and history of the area, the collector's fieldwork methodology, a list of farmers working the area, the size of their flock and their sheep ear marks. Section Two describes the shepherd's year, including lambing, the May Meet (or Show of Tups), shearing, the Eskdale Show, dipping and mating. This section also describes other related tasks, including dry stone walling and fencing. Section Three focusses on sheep dogs and gathering (including training, commands and gathering techniques). The fourth section deals with the care of sheep, and includes dialect terms for the main illnesses suffered by sheep, a section on sheep marking and shepherds' crooks. The fifth section is a dialect appendix of words recorded during fieldwork. Photographs illustrating all of the above sections are included throughout.
