The Living Dialect of Leeds in the West Riding of Yorkshire
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in Leeds, in the old West Riding of Yorkshire, based on interviews with people living in the Woodhouse, Hunslet and Adel districts of the city. Three chapters give a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1955, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Leeds dialect. An Appendix lists words found in the Leeds dialect which are not used in RSE (Received Standard English).
