The Nelson Hospital Gala: A Study of its Origins, Development and Contemporary Form
Description
A study of the origin and development of the Hospital Gala in Nelson, with emphasis on the post-World War Two galas and the 1970 event in particular. The study's sections present a history of the event, and a description of the gala of 1970, with sections on three major types of entry in the procession (the tableau - the horse and dray entered by Thwaites Brewery; the individual artist - Henry Whitaker as Mother Riley; the dance troupe - the morris dancers, or girls' Carnival morris). Photographs and an official programme of the 1970 event are included, with also related newspaper cuttings from the years 1921, 1924 and 1970.
