A Comparison of the Living Dialects of Haydock and St. Helens, Lancashire
Description
A study of the dialects spoken in Haydock and St. Helens in Lancashire, based on data collected from two informants from each locality. Each dialect is examined separately and a description presented. Comparison is then made of the resulting descriptions and total data, in the context of the collector's native knowledge of the linguistic and sociological environment. An introduction to the two localities is followed by four chapters which present (for both towns) vowel description and vowel data, and consonant description and consonant data. A final section presents a comparison of the two dialects. An Appendix contains dialectal features of a grammatical rather than phonetic nature. A large map of the county borough of St. Helens (6 inches: 1 mile), and a Word Index, are included.
