The Phonology of the Dialect of Cradley, West Midlands: A Descriptive and Historical Survey

Description

A study of the dialect spoken by two informants from the West Midlands, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews in Cradley and Smethwick. An introduction to Cradley, the Black Country area and the informants is followed by five chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 19[80], describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), the development of consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1981, and present a tabular summary of the Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Cradley dialect. A Word List is included.
