The Phonology of the Dialect of Biddulph Moor, in the County of Staffordshire
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in Biddulph Moor in Staffordshire. An introduction to the village is followed by chapters which give a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1950, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of stressed vowels in the living dialect. Three appendices present words that occur in the Biddulph Moor dialect and are not recorded in Joseph Wright's 'English Dialect Dictionary', words that occur in the Biddulph Moor dialect and are not recorded for Staffordshire in Wright's 'English Dialect Dictionary' (1898-1905), the Definite Article in the dialect, and the apparent omission of To as a preposition and as part of the infinitive. A Word List is included.
