Tradition and Superstition in the Theatre

Description

A collection of theatrical superstitions and traditions, gathered from actors, actresses, musicians and theatre staff working in Leeds and London. The first of six chapters cites the recent changes in the theatre and theatrical life. Chapter Two gives thirty-nine examples of belief, superstition and tradition, as related by the collector's informants. Chapter Three covers theatrical idioms (technical and general terms, slang including Polari); Chapter Four concerns practical jokes, Chapter Five ghosts in the theatre, and the final chapter offers some concluding remarks. A newspaper cutting from the 'Yorkshire Post', concerning the collector's research, is included.
