A Collection of Children's Games, Rhymes and Songs

Description

A collection of children's games, rhymes and songs, collected in the Manchester area from children between the ages of nine and fifteen, playing in the street or whilst at school. Schools visited were in Pendleton, Eccles, Hulme and Walkden. The games recorded have been arranged in sections, according to methods of play. These are skipping, ball, rhymes used for both skipping and ball games, dipping, hopping, clapping, singing, dancing, acting, chants, parodies of popular songs, action games where only a few words are used. Tune transcriptions of twenty-nine songs, chants and rhymes are included. An Index of First Lines is also included, and a copy of a 1962 article from the 'Manchester Evening News' regarding children's play. Four copy photographs from the same newspaper, including two featured in the article, are included, as well as three photographs taken by the collector at a school in Pendleton.
