A Historical and Descriptive Phonology of the Dialect of Hackney

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in the Hackney area of London, based on data collected through interviews with one principal informant, and conversations with others at an Old Age Home. An introduction to the area and the principal informant (including photocopied images of Hackney in the 1880s and 1980s), is followed by five chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 19[81], describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1982, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English and other equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Hackney dialect. A Word List is included.
