The Dialect of Upper Coquetdale
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in Upper Coquetdale, Northumberland, based on interviews with five informants. An introduction to the area and the informants is followed by five chapters which present a description of the sounds of the Upper Coquetdale dialect (vowels in stressed syllables, consonants), the development of Middle English vowels in stressed syllables in the dialect, a summary of the Old English, Old French, Scandinavian and Middle English equivalents of the stressed vowels in the dialect, characteristic unstressed features of the dialect, and orthographic and phonetic transcriptions of extracts from conversations between the collector and two of the informants. One of these concerns the informant playing the fiddle for weddings, other fiddlers in the area and the passing on of traditional dance tunes. A Word List is included.
