An Account of the Phonology of the Dialect of High Coniscliffe

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in High Coniscliffe in County Durham, based on fieldwork interviews conducted between June and September 1949 with people living in the village. An introduction to the village is followed by chapters which give a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1950, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1950, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of stressed vowels in the living dialect. An Appendix contains examples of the dialect, recorded phonetically. A Word List is also included. Two photographs show views of the village.
