The Dialect of Medomsley in the County of Durham
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in Medomsley, County Durham, based on data collected during interviews with three informants in March, July and October 1962, using the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire to elicit information, and tape recordings of two of the informants made by Stanley Ellis [in 1962]. An introduction to the village and the informants (illustrated with photographs) is followed by three sections. Part One presents orthographic and phonetic transcriptions of Ellis' tape-recorded interviews, and the three informants' responses to the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire (Books I-IX). These responses are recorded phonetically on Questionnaire Response Book leaves, bound within the main body of the study. Part Two describes and examines the dialect revealed in the tape transcriptions, with chapters on the vowel phonemes and the consonant phonemes of the Medomsley dialects, the vowels of the dialects exemplified and compared, and differences in consonant usage. Part Three contains a Vowel and Consonant Index, and a Word Index. A duplicate set of the Questionnaire responses [carbon copies] accompanies the study.
