Rope and Rope-Making

Description

A study which records the development and place in society of rope making. Its ten chapters provide a history of rope making, descriptions of machinery and types of rope, rope manufacture (including images from trade promotional literature), case studies of two rope-makers (the first, working in the Peak Cavern in Castleton in Derbyshire, the other working in Stockton-on-Tees), descriptions of rope in use, hay rope-making on the Lleyn Peninsula, North-West Wales, the reminiscences of people working in, or connected with, the trade (many taken from a book on the history of the Gourock Ropework Company), rope in language (phrases, proverbs and sayings) and a glossary of trade terms.
