The Phonology of the Dialect of Minster-in-Thanet in the County of Kent

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in the Kent village of Minster-in-Thanet, based on conversations with two local male informants. An introduction to the village and the informants is followed by five chapters which present the sounds of the Minster dialect, recorded in 19[72], describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), the development of Middle English consonants in the dialect, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Old Norse and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Minster dialect. An Index of Words recorded in the study is included. A postcard and guide pamphlet for Minster Abbey [i.e. Minster-in-Thanet Abbey; not Minster Abbey, Minster near Sheerness], are included in the Introduction.
