The Phonology of the Burbage Dialect

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in Burbage in Leicestershire, based on interviews with four informants in 1954. An introduction to the village and the area is followed by four chapters which give a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1954, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unaccented syllables), and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of stressed vowels in the living dialect. Two appendices present Burbage words recorded and not recorded in Joseph Wright's 'English Dialect Dictionary' (1898-1905), and notable features of the Burbage dialect. A Word List is also included. A separate file of printed/ms. sheets is included. These contain answers to the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire (Books I-IX), recorded phonetically by the collector during fieldwork in Burbage (and Aston Flamville) between January and September 1954. Biographical notes on the four informants are also included.
