The Living Dialect of Styal (Cheshire): A Descriptive and Historical Survey

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in the village of Styal, in Cheshire, based on data gathered principally from one male informant. An introduction to the village and its environs, the fieldwork and the informant (including photographs), is followed by three chapters which present a description of the sounds of the Styal dialect recorded in 19[72], describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed syllables), and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Old French and Scandinavian equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Styal dialect. An Appendix lists unusual words and phrases (recorded phonetically), with their meanings. An Index of Words is also included.
