Boatbuilding on the Thames Between Richmond and Kingston: An Approach to the Study of Material Culture in an Urban Environment
Description
A dissertation examining evidence of material culture in a small local industry, in a modern urban environment. The study focusses on the boatbuilding firm of Tough Brothers of Teddington, and presents information collected from one informant on the history of the firm, the types of boat built at various points in the firm's history, methods of construction, terminology employed, the tools and materials used. The various construction processes are illustrated by line drawings and photographs. The study also presents some information on the informant, his background, and attitudes to changes in working and construction methods. A transcript of an interview with the informant is included. This presentation of fieldwork results is preceded by a section on theory, the historical development of Folk Life Studies and the different approaches to the study of folk life (and in particular, material culture).
