Ghost Stories of Salford and District
Description
An examination of supernatural legends about people associated with locations within the Metropolitan District of Salford. The introductory section presents the study's aims and intentions, and the attitudes of the collector's informants. The following section contains stories associated with sixteen locations (taken in alphabetical order). The final section, in which the material collected is analysed, comprises sections covering exaggeration by informants for effect, the commercialisation of ghosts, the influence of written accounts and of the media, dogs, atmosphere, secondary themes (levitation, animals other than dogs, period costume, abode), the function of ghost belief in Salford and conclusions. Photographs and postcard prints of the locations described are included.
