The Phonology of the Dialect of Shaw (Lancashire): A Descriptive and Historical Survey
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in the town of Shaw, near Oldham in Greater Manchester, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with three local informants. An introduction to the town and the informants (which includes photographs and a description of the Shaw custom of beating the bounds, observed every seven years), is followed by four chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 19[75], describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Shaw dialect. An Appendix lists unusual words, with their meanings. An Index of Words is included.
