Description
An investigation presented in six chapters, the first being a history of boat-building in and around Hartlepool (including firms listed in local trade directories for the period 1828-1894). Chapter Two considers the tools of the trade (with photographs), Chapter Three the construction of a ship's life boat (including two photocopied plans, undated, showing the general construction of the boat, and the installation of the engine). The fourth chapter describes the the standard fishing boat used along the North-East coast (the coble). Photographs and diagrams illustrate the boat's construction. Chapter Five discusses Trades' Unions, pay rates, construction charges and working conditions. This includes a typed transcript of boatbuilders' rates of pay in 1943, and a photocopied certificate confirming the serving of an apprenticeship as a boatbuilder (1924). Both relate to the boat builders J. H. Pounder and Company Limited of Hartlepool. The final chapter describes customs and traditions observed among boatbuilders.
