The Making of the Trawl

Description

A dissertation on the fishing industry in Hull, with particular reference to the making of the trawl net (full name, the Small Granton Trawl). The study provides contextual information on the history of Hull and its fishing industry, and the history of the trawl, followed by descriptions of the contemporary use of the trawl by Hull fishermen, the braiding, joining and repairing of nets, and the fishing gear. A number of ink drawings of nets and associated implements, drawn by the collector, are included. Four appendices provide a glossary of terms, a comparison of terminology with that of Fleetwood in Lancashire, a comparison of terms used in mending and joining with those used on the River Tweed, and a list of informants. Seven black and white photographs show the making and braiding of nets inside the net-loft at the firm of Coal, Salt and Tanning Company Limited. A hand-drawn ink drawing of a Small Granton Trawl, showing component parts and dimensions, is included at the end of the study (measures 52.5cm x 76cm).
