The Phonology of the Dialect of Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire: A Descriptive and Historical Survey

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in the Lancashire town of Oswaldtwistle, based principally on data collected through interviews with two local people. An introduction to the town and the informants is followed by five chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 19[81], describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1982, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Old French and Scandinavian equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Oswaldtwistle dialect. A Word List is included.
