An Account of the Phonology of the Dialect of Dinnington, Northumberland
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in the village of Dinnington in Northumberland, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with three local inhabitants. An introduction to the village and the informants is followed by five chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds used in the dialect recorded in 19[74], record the development of Middle English sounds in the dialect (in vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), summarise the modern Dinnington equivalents of the Middle English stressed vowels, and record the changes in consonantal sounds from Middle English to 1975. An index of words used for the purposes of illustration in the study is included.
