The Phonology of the Dialect of Middleton, Lancashire: A Descriptive and Historical Survey

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in Middleton, near Oldham in Greater Manchester, based on data collected through interviews with two principal informants, and conversations with others at a local bowling club. An introduction to the area and the informants is followed by five chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the Middleton dialect recorded in 19[78], describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1979, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the dialect. An Ordnance Survey map (Middleton Sheet SD 80) is included in the Introduction, and summary sheets of working papers for phonemic and statistical analyses are held in the back pocket of the study's binding.
