The Living Dialect of Barton in South Nottinghamshire

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in Barton in Fabis, Nottinghamshire, based on fieldwork interviews undertaken in 1957 with three male informants. An introduction to the village and the informants is followed by four chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1957, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of stressed vowels in the living dialect. A Word List is included. The first appendix presents phonetic and orthographic transcriptions of a tape-recorded interview with the collector's principal informant, made in September 1957 and subsequently copied onto a gramophone disc. This includes talk of marbles and thacking pegs. The second appendix presents some syntactical considerations, and the final appendix outlines the development of the place name Barton in Fabis. Photographs of the informants and the village are included within the body of the study, with two loose Ordnance Survey maps of the area inserted at the back. A letter from the collector to Harold Orton, concerning a tabular summary of words, is included with the maps (dated April 30th [1958]).
