The Living Dialect of Gravenhurst, Bedfordshire

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in Gravenhurst, Bedfordshire, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with two principal informants. An introduction to the village and the informants is followed by five chapters which record the sounds of the modern dialect, the development in the dialect of Middle English stressed vowels, Middle English vowels in unstressed syllables and Middle English consonants. The final chapter presents a tabular summary of the origins of stressed vowels in the Gravenhurst dialect. A list of words, on which the study is based, is included. Photographs of the principal informants, and views of the village, are also included.
